the other week when a snowstorm took my Town (Collingswood) by storm, I was to say the very least concerned about the aftermath that ensued. 2 days after the storm hit us, I decided to be adventurous and make my trip to the game store about a mile or so away. The interesting thing about the trip was that along the way there were some path ways that were plowed and cleared already while others were either not touched at all or walked through by someone who wanted to make their ‘mark’ on where they have been. The interesting thing about it is that the people who were outside walking like i was took the paths that were cleared or made by someone else as much as possible. It made me think about how we communicate with each other by simply clearing roads whether we intend to or not. The path made by those who chose to simply plow through the snow was to me an unintended way of saying “i’ll make walking through this treacherous snow a little easier for you by expressing how i truly feel about it.” I saw an underlying message in how things like that work out for the better. Not only that i was also appreciative of it as well. If i knew who those people were i would probably be the type to find where they live and thank them personally for an easier trip to the game store and back again.

A lot of things in society are based on norms that we as a culture have made up ourselves. For example proper politeness when talking to a particular group of people is something that we as a soicety have established without officially stating so. In our class discussion we talked about the idea of the term ‘disability’ actually means. The interesting thing about it is that everyone has their own definition of it. For instance, what it means to be disabled for one person may mean that someone who isn’t considered ‘normal’ compared to other individuals. It may even be to the point that what it means to be disabled for them is the idea that thay just simply can’t do things on their own that a person who is considered ‘normal’ could actually do.

Moreover the interesting thing i find about disability in our culture is that the term redefines itself as something that is used pretty frequently in describing someone or something in a joking manner. For instance, someone who may have not known something right away while having a conversation with someone could be called something like ‘stupid’ or ‘mentally challenged’ in sort of a playful way. However, although it is just in a playful manner, it coul also be looked at as being ignorant to someone who may actually be mentally retarded. The intersting thing about this is that if that same person were to actually be talking to a mentally reatrded person who made the same mistake, then almost every time that person would automatically be sensitive to that and not even mention it at all.

When talking about blogging, there are some people that find it to be a private thing, as we discussed in class. However we also discussed that blogs on the Internet, whether or not it is set to private, can be seen by anyone. I bring this point up to say this: with that in mind what actually gives them this idea in the first place? Is it because society has places their mindset there or is it due to the fact that some people have a different sense of what privacy is? The more interesting thing about people privating their blogs, they may even be aware of the fact that others can see their blogs and they post anyway. Maybe some individuals find that other strangers being able to see them may be an open door for comments. All of this makes me wonder just what is the satisfaction that people get from strangers commenting on their blogs? I feel that there possibly be one of two explanations for this to take place. One reason may be because people want a sense that others in the world may feel the same way they do and sort of identify themselves with what someone posted. Another possible reason could be just because alot of people who publicly post things may just be doing it to make new friends or meet new people. Some individuals find that meeting people through the Internet is alot better than Meeting them in person. By blogging it may be easier for them to make friend with those who comment on them mainly for the reason of someone showing the same interest in a particular subject as you do.

When we were talking about communication in the workplace, I had very much to say, however, I couldnt exactly make a shorter version of what it was. I feel that lightening the mood in any workplace helps for a better environment. I feel that when multiple personalities come together in any sense (this case being at work inparticular) communication that doesn’t have to do with actual work makes for better production. For instance, years ago I had a similar situation that dealt with this very thing. I had a part time job during the summer working at McDonalds. Now of course this is definitely not the most glamorous job someone could have. However, I really enjoyed working there only because of the people I worked with. In some rare ocassions I even looked forward to going to work just because of who was going to be there. It was almost as if I didn’t care about working in fast food at all. Needless to say the job itself was a drag, but this just comes to show you that the better your environment, or co-workers in this particular case, the better off someone would be. I mean someone can work at a place that they make 6 figures with full benefits all they want. But I feel as though if the requirements of that job is that there is rarely any interation with others, and that person is overall miserable, then i don’t think that they would be as happy as someone who gets paid little but really loves what they do because of their environment. So in that sense I believe that communication with others or interaction with people of any kind, especially the down time with others, not only plays a significant role in helping the overall quality of work, but it also helps others to find out about one’s identity as a person as well.

So the other I thought of the phrase, “It’s not the clothes that make the man.” In most aspects that is a true fact. However I wondered if I should be asking myself a question. That question is, “Do the clothes make who the man wants to become?” Of course I am referring to the idea of both male and female gender alike. It’s funny how this sort of thing comes up just a few days before halloween because of the fact that the holiday represents people in the literal sense putting on masks and dressing up as someone else for the day. However the interesting thing about this is that I can’t help but wonder to myself If dressing up for Halloween says alot more about someone’s true identity? Better yet, is what they choose to be say something about who they are inside? Now grant it it’s understood that some dress up just for the sake of playing along. However you got to think to yourself if someone that is being someone they admire or want to be if they are being that person to make a statement of their personality? Or are they doing it to get a certain amount of attention from the opposite gender that they don’t usually get normally. And that could be applied to either a guy getting girls attention or vise versa. For whatever the reason may be, it all still points to the fact that most might dress up simply to find where they stand in society as far as their identity goes.

What exactly defines being a fit parent? Better yet does it even have any boundaries at all? Reading the article about gay men not being fit to raise a child, I couldn’t help but wonder why is that they can’t? Grant it the lifestyle that they chose could greatly affect the child’s thought process. However that doesn’t nessecsarily mean that a homosexual male can’t be a good dad. If we were to take this kind of apporach to the situation, there could be alot of parents who aren’t fit to raise their child as well. For instance what about single parents? They have a hard time raising children due to the fact that they are just one person. It turns out to be either a male or a female’s perspective mainly when talking about single moms or single dad’s. I think that the main concern about same sex parents raising the child is that he or she may be greatly confused as to why both of their parents are the same gender. However that is when the parents themselves step in to explain to their kids the difference at their own discretion. In other words, if two dads explain to their adopted kid the difference between same sex marriges and what is the norm of marrige, then it should be repected that they are at the very least trying to fulfill their duties as parents in teaching. On the flipside of that however, it is also understood that a gay couple raising. A child could in fact skew their perspective on lifestyles completely. For instance, those same sex parents could be bias towards straight people and as a result teach their child that being gay is the norm. However this point also raises the question of you know just because a gay couple teaches their child that mindset, does it nessecsarily make them bad parents? Better yet does It make them worse parents then heterosexual parents who teach their children to be predjudice?

The word institution would initially strike most people as a type of structural meaning rather than a meaning of freedom. What I mean by that is that when institution is brought up whether in conversation or when someone sees the word in a newspaper or something, it usually is interpreted as a form of structure or consistent routine. However, nowadays most of us practice institutions in different ways. For instance we discussed the idea of Religion not being the same definition of an institution as it was in the past. This also brings up an interesting point because I happen to be one of those people who do not follow the normal routine of what an institution is as far as practicing religion goes. The significance of this is that i feel like i am just as good a “christian” as one who goes to church on a consistent basis. The other interesting thing about this is how the mob effect comes into play here. Personally I am not really phased by it but I wonder if someone who was in my same position would handle it. For instance, as I mentioned before, I am not religious in the sense that i go to church every single sunday, attend bible study or other things like that. However i do consider myself as a christian on the same level as a person who does these things even with the majority of christians that I know doing the same. I always have the sense that people do look down upon me because of my actions but at the same token I do still consider myself an equal to them. I just wonder if a person who would be or is in my position would handle the same circumstances. In other words would they fall under the mob mentality and follow the crowd or would they do what i do now which is to be their own person? Every person is different but I do believe that most would follow the majority because in most cases that’s what ends up happening even when not dealing with religion. Despite all this, I am a strong-willed person who subconconciously lives by this Quote, “When you stand by something, stay firm even when standing alone.”

Communication when most of us think about it is based on the idea of two people either talking or making signals to one another in order or relay messages back and forth. However when it comes to non humans, the only type of communication that could be made is that of making signals or gestures. This also raises alot of questions as well. For instance, who is to determine exactly if the animal is communicating the right signals through learning what to do in that situation? Or is it because of the fact that they jus learned the signals through repetition and they disciplined themselves to do these things. I personally don’t think that these monkeys as we saw in the video are actually fully communicating with us. It actually is more if the fact that they are learning to do tasks based On the signals that are given to them. Now grant it that does show some form of communication. However, as far as the animal fully comprehending the action of getting keys, or making fire, I don’t think that they are thinking about why they do these things. In other words, you can probably think of it as the monkey putting pieces to the puzzle together but not actually caring about what the end result looks like so to speak. So Overall I do think that there is some form of communication but only on a less complicated and analytical scale.

It is really interesting to think how interacting with others is so vital to language. I never actually thought of the fact that interacting with others is very contingent on learning the thngs you know. That also brings up another intersting thought. That thought is how the concept of originality is ultimately non-existent. However to me I believe that being original can still have its meaning. For instance, I learned tha every idea that a person has comes from something else. With that in mind I feel that originality comes from someone who take a different combination of those ideas and make it their own wether it be a new trend, invention, or other things of that nature.
